Growing potatoes in a barrel

A rather interesting method of growing potatoes in a barrel. To do this, take high-capacity — iron, plastic, wooden, it doesn't matter what, as long as it was without bottom and with the accomplished holes around the circumference to ensure that the soil has had a chance to breathe, and at the bottom do not stagnate water.

This method has a long history. As a farmer, harvesting the compost in an old barrel, dropped the potato tuber, which after a while grew. The stems were again filled with the next portion of waste. When the capacity was full, her grown potato Bush. In the fall the farmer agreed to pull him, but it was not there. The stems went deep in the compost was covered with garlands of tubers. In the end, he is a fellow about a sack of potatoes.

Gradually, this method perfected. First treated with one tuber. It was placed on the bottom of the tank, shots his layer of compost with a thickness of 5-6 cm from the top and poured 9-10 cm of compost. When the shoots reached 2-3 cm, they are again sprinkled in the same way. And so repeated several times. By the end of the growing season in the barrel already had a lot of tubers of various sizes.

Later they began to lay the tubers in a checkerboard pattern. When the seedlings are covered in the same layer of compost on top again and planted the tubers. This operation was repeated 4-5 times, as necessary plants were hilled. The crop is removed gradually, since last planting time.

For testing a new method it is recommended to perform the following preparatory work.

1. Set on the site of the old metal barrel. You can also use any container of suitable size, for example, a wooden tub or even a thick plastic bag, securely fastened to the ground. Finally, from any available materials to make a box about the size of 1x1x1 m.

2. From the barrel, remove the bottom to get out of it the excess moisture and to provide free access of earthworms to the soil.

3. In the walls of the barrel at intervals of about 10-20 cm make a hole with a diameter of 0.5-1 cm for oxygen in the root system of the future potato plants.

4. The layer height of 10 cm must consist of the drug "EM-Bocas", loam and ordinary soil in a ratio of 1:1:1.

The potatoes are planted (as it does not form laterals) approximately every 20 cm, and, if the capacity for growing in cross-section round, planted by the diameter, if square in a checkerboard pattern.

Tubers will be planted a lot, so to supply oxygen to the root system of all plants done in the sides of the barrel hole is clearly not enough. To avoid oxygen starvation in the root zone is needed at the bottom of the barrel to put a rubber hose, rolled in a spiral so that the distance between turns was about 10 cm In the hose at intervals of 15-20 cm with a knife to make slit-like incisions 2-3 cm long Outer end of the hose beyond the barrel, and the inner tightly shut. This is done to ensure that ordinary pump 2-3 times a week for 5-10 minutes to upload to the root in the air.

Layer-by-layer filling the barrel with potting mix, do not let the sprouts to fully hatch. Once the sprout reaches the upper boundary of the soil layer, it is necessary immediately to fill the next layer. If you miss this process, the sprouts are fully grow, will form a green part, and the plant will not form a root system, and the surface of the earth will develop a powerful green stem.

If because of circumstances you are able to keep track of the formation of germs, it is possible in each of the three lower layers of fertile soils and consistently to plant potatoes, not necessarily whole tubers, and in order to save planting material use of the tuber PLI eyes. So you'll have a fit "in the 3rd floor." And if you do it correctly, the barrel will form a lot of powerful tubular root systems, which generated a huge amount of tubers.

Do not forget to maintain the required soil moisture. Also note that your potatoes are around the middle of July "eat" almost all the nutrients that were in the barrel, so the plants will require feeding. As well as a fresh "EM-bokashi" you pour you can't, because the barrel is already filled, you can water the plant talker made of them. This procedure should be performed at least 1 time a week, but better, of course, 2-3 times, if you have the opportunity.

For making mash, for example, needs a 200-liter barrel one-third filled with soil mixture of diluted drug EM-1 and sod land in a ratio of 1:1, pour to the brim of non-chlorinated water and allow to stand not less than days. For example, you come to the site on Saturday evening, from ferment mash, and Sunday night, before leaving, watering your plants.

Observing all of the conditions listed above, as well as pumping air into the root system, you can plot 1x1 m to get more bags of potatoes.
