The first car designed by Ferdinand Porsche, founder of Porsche, was electric. The story began in 1898. The electric car was called the Egger-Lohner C2 Phaeton (or R1) and featured the following characteristics:
- Electric motor power — 5 horsepower
- 12-speed transmission, which caused the wheels in motion
- The speed of the electric vehicle is 35 km/h
- One charge enough for 80 km
Model name R1 means the following: this car was the first car Porsche — Porsche No. 1. Now C2 Phaeton is the heritage of the Porsche Museum (Stuttgart district of Zuffenhausen). Before the electric car came to the Museum, he in 1902 was stored in a shed of a private owner. Lost part of the electric vehicle C2 Phaeton — seat and some elements of the car to restore did not, in order to maintain complete authenticity of the electric vehicle.
C2 Phaeton became the centerpiece of the Porsche Museum. Especially important is the fact that the first Porsche was an electric car, not the car steam-powered or diesel. R1 was suitable for the movement not only in summer but in winter due to the possibility to modify the frame. In 1899, the P1 electric car took part in the race. Onboard the car there were three people. He took the silver, arriving at the finish line 18 minutes after the leader. In fact it was an excellent result — more than half the races out of the race due to a technical fault, which arose in the road. R1 was a complete victory and won the championship among the least energy-consuming cars in traffic. If you're in Stuttgart, don't miss the opportunity to see the P1 on display there on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Porsche Museum.
