Swedish design studio Tomorrow Machine and agricultural start-up NFARM have created Microgarden, a stylish and innovative way to grow your own vegetables in an ordinary city apartment.

Recently launched on IndieGoGo, the Microgarden kit consists of organic microgreen seeds, agar agar powder and recycled, reusable plastic sheets that can be easily folded into a miniature cone-shaped greenhouse. Such a micro-greenhouse can be built in just 5 minutes, and in an ordinary city apartment will grow delicious, organic vegetables without the need for watering!

Tomorrow Machine and INFARM position Microgarden as the “next generation of households” in which miniature greenhouses will serve as an affordable and incredibly effective way to grow pesticide-free vegetables and plants. It should be noted that all this natural greens can be grown in the dark.

Microgarden is designed for even the most beginner gardeners. This homemade mini-garden uses clear agar-agar-based algae as a nutrient medium from which the roots of so-called microgreens (specially bred vegetables) absorb moisture to eliminate the need for watering. Microgreens usually mature in just 5 to 14 days, and happy owners of such a greenhouse on the windowsill will be able to see the whole process of growth through transparent plastic.

“We created Microgarden to make agriculture affordable and easy for everyone,” the authors write. “Where else can you get delicious greens without pesticides or long transportation, growing them in your own home, without using a lot of fertilizer and water?”

To raise funds for the concept and mass production of Microgarden kits, INFARM launched a crowdfunding campaign on the IndieGoGo portal. Investors will now be able to use Microgarden before it hits the market.
