Crazy fishing that lasts 15 minutes + video

A rather unusual type of fishing can be observed once a year in Mali, in the county of Dogon. The oldest fishing ritual takes place in the only sacred pond, which during the drought remains full of fish teeth. Crazy fishing is a sight truly worthy of attention.

Fishing in the lake is strictly prohibited throughout the year, and only once a year, on the day of the Antogo holiday, hundreds of men jumping into the lake, grab the fish with their bare hands. After this madness, the fish in the pond, apparently, does not remain at all.

The small village of Bamba, once surrounded by green forests and a lake, over time, due to climate change, has turned into a dry, arid, rocky area. And only a small pond remained the last remnant of the former abundance. The water of this lake is considered sacred and inhabited by good spirits, and in the old days the waters of the lake provided the locals with tons of fish.

On Antogo Day, hundreds of residents arrive at Lake Bamba. It is the size of an Olympic swimming pool. Young people, children, old people, armed with homemade baskets, and other improvised means, waiting for the signal, crowding around the lake. Women are not allowed to participate in the ritual.

All this crazy fishing lasts about 15 minutes. After the signal shot, signifying the end of the ritual, all the fish caught is given to the oldest resident of Bamba, who is the guarantee that all the catch will be fairly distributed among all the villages.
