In Denmark figured out how to increase the endurance of the blades of wind turbines
Offshore wind turbines are playing an important role in the production of electricity from renewable sources. But the harsh weather conditions of coastal areas are a common cause of breakdowns, which in turn significantly reduces the efficiency of these wind turbines.
Scientists from the research Centre of wind energy technology in Kolding (Denmark) has developed an innovative coating system that increases the productivity of the blades of offshore wind turbines.
"Look at this piece of aluminium — it is completely ruined by drops of rain. It happened during the application of simulated weather conditions here at our center, where we are testing new materials used to make blades for wind turbines. Lately, we have managed to create a coating material, which, as we found out with the help of tests five times better withstands rain and ocean, " says Michael Drachmann the Hague, the leading engineer of the research center LM Wind Power Technology Centre. In the framework of the European project Windtrust aimed at reducing the cost of manufacturing wind turbines, the specialists check for new material (polyurethane), the purpose of which is to combat the effects of erosion.
Endurance of the new coating is five times higher than the existing industrial standards.
"The latest erosion control materials and technologies able to significantly reduce maintenance costs. The maintenance cost is a very important issue if we are talking about wind turbines at sea, because such turbines are often hard to reach", says Jens Ulrich Laursen, project Manager.Recent statistics speak to the importance of the market for offshore wind turbines in Europe the total capacity of the wind currently covers almost 11 percent of European electricity needs.
Last year, twice in a row, Denmark has set a world record for the production of wind energy, which is now 42% of all electricity in this country. published
