Argentina: tango on the edge of the world
Argentina is a distant country, steeped in the Russian mind the romantic aura and causing the memory circuit of disparate associations. Passionate tango and childish soap Opera. Argentine steaks and constant mate. And Evita, the years of military dictatorship, the courage of the mothers of the Plaza de Mayo... All together it adds up to a quirky colorful puzzle.
First impression
They say Argentines in Latin America (especially in Brazil) dislike: they say, too arrogant, look at all from top to bottom, snobs. The first minute of our stay on Argentine soil has disproved this stereotype: Buenos Aires, in contrast to Rio, does not inspire a sense of threat and insecurity, and welcomes you into his arms.
But even if it is the opinion of the Argentines and was honored, you do not leave not very politically correct idea that some signs that they may be: beautiful architecture, order, tidiness, attention to detail in contrast to the romantic, but still chaos other Latin American countries. Too strong in Argentina with European culture (every second we met Argentine — grandmother from Palermo or uncle from Genoa).
The first impression upon arrival in Argentina — accuracy, even pedantry. Perhaps it appeared only in contrast to Rio, departing from which, we have managed to free fall in the relegation zone without passport control. But here: fingerprinting at the border veterinary control in Patagonia, accurate counting of remaining at our disposal-time stay, when we the day went on a trip to Uruguay.
The South
Our journey begins in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, Fin del mundo (end of the world), as the Argentines, and the administrative center of the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and Islands South Atlantic. Generally, in all of Ushuaia "the southern" ski resort, the railroad, the lighthouse, the post office, where is necessary to send relatives postcards (ours took almost a month to reach the recipients).
In fact, purely geographically, the majority of Siberian cities are closer to the North pole than Ushuaia — the southern, but the influence of the Antarctic here so much that even in the height of summer (January and February) the air is rarely warms up to +15°C, strong winds, and the heating of homes is not off at all.
As probably in any other remote corner of the world originally here exiled criminals of all stripes. However, I must give credit to Argentines — from the mixture of convict-romance cruisemiles they managed to make the demanded tourist product over the last 15 years the flow of tourists in Ushuaia has grown at least twice.
In the first place Fire island go untouched nature. Taking a tour of the Beagle channel in the port of Ushuaia, you can ride to the island of sea lions and penguins, and at the same time to see the South of the Estancia (estate) in the world. During the tour, it's funny to see how the operator icon on the mobile screen — from Argentine to Chilean and back: the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego somehow cleverly divided between the two countries. Step left Argentina, step to the right and Chile.
After shore excursions, you can explore the National Park of Tierra del Fuego: take one of the Hiking trails, admire the mix of landscapes in the Bay Lapataia, make beautiful pictures of the "Northern" nature, to observe beaver dams, put in the passport stamp Fin del mundo at the southernmost post of the world in the Gulf Ensenada...
Country of glaciers
After Tierra del Fuego fly on Northwest, deep into the Patagonian steppe. An hour by plane and arrive in the town of El Calafate in the province of Santa Cruz, which is called the land of glaciers.
From El Calafate you can choose tours with different themes and difficulties, but the main local attraction, of course, the Perito Moreno glacier. So this is the giant, towering nearly 80 metres over the surface of lake Argentino, just blows the imagination. When giant chunks of ice crashing from the glacier break away and fall into the lake, raising a huge wave, it seems that all shifts of the human desire to conquer nature completely insignificant.
In addition to Perito Moreno from El Calafate you can go Hiking to the Fitz Roy mountain or in the Chilean reserve of Torres del Paine. We, not having the time to spare, decided to postpone them for next time. However, "simple" trip from El Calafate surprise no less. In Laguna Nimez you can observe the beautiful pink flamingos. And a trip to the Estancia La Leona with a visit to the so-called petrified forest will truly appreciate the power of the Patagonian steppes and deserts.
In General, Patagonia, his spirit is somewhat reminiscent of Siberia. Endless space — and not a soul (except occasionally small herds of guanaco). The legendary route 40, which stretches from North to South of Argentina at more than 5000 km, — the "younger brother" of the TRANS-Siberian. The love of the inhabitants of Patagonia to large cars (Toyota Hilux many years held the top sales REP) — endless miles can only be overcome on something reliable. Finally, the willingness to drive several hours just to attend a music festival in the nearest town, is nothing like?
But Patagonia is a land not only for the brave adventurers, in Argentina, it is also famous for its chocolate and ice cream (and Hello again to the Italian roots of Argentines!). By all means try!
Capital! Capital!
The final stage of our journey in Argentina began in Buenos Aires is a huge "European" metropolis on the Bay of Rio de La Plata. The city truly offers entertainment for every taste: museums and galleries, parks, shopping, great food...
Here we for the first time our trips boarded the double Decker tour bus, what not a bit sorry. Full circle takes a little over three hours and covers all the major sights, from Plaza de Mayo square, which is still going on Thursdays mothers whose children were abducted during the military dictatorship and the popular district of La Boca, famous for its colorful houses, street art and home to the Boca juniors.
Left from Argentina, we have every confidence that he will definitely come back here again. Because we did not have time to visit the Peninsula valdés, which come to dance whales, did not see the famous Iguazu falls, in the end, not visited the province with the charming name Jujuy... So don't cry for us Argentina, we'll meet again!
Food and Souvenirs
If Argentinean cuisine is associated primarily with steaks and meat on the Parrilla, Tierra del Fuego is the king crab, which is cooked in any restaurant in Ushuaia. If the soul does not tremble, it is even possible to choose from the aquarium of the crab you want to see on their plate.
As an accompaniment to light Patagonian beer — perhaps not the most subtle combination, but after a day full of impressions, is exactly what we need. Patagonia in Argentina famous for its Handicrafts, so Souvenirs from trips, knives, leather goods, liqueurs Patagonian herbs. Or "observetions" mate, gourd and bombilla (the Argentines say "bombita").
