Gunkanjima is an island in the Pacific Ocean. It belongs to Japan. Gunkanjima means "cruiser" in Japanese, so named because of the buildings, the island resembles a warship from the sea.







Off the west coast of Japan is a dead island that is barely known even to the Japanese. For a long time, the island was nothing more than a small reef.



In 1810, the accidental discovery of coal decisively changed the fate of this reef. The island was inhabited around the same year. Construction began, and through the coal industry, the reef began to expand continuously.



For 50 years, it was the most densely populated place on earth - 5.3 thousand people with a radius of about 1 km of the island itself.



By 1974, all the inhabitants had left the island due to the dried up of fossils, and the city turned into a ghost town. The mines quickly closed, and one of the most densely populated islands in the world became completely deserted.



The city looked as if all its inhabitants had suddenly disappeared overnight.



At the moment, visiting the island is prohibited by the Japanese government.
