American biotechnologists have created a device of the five thousand colonies of E. coli, which act as independent "pixels" in a kind of liquid crystal display, which they adapted to display the concentration of arsenic in the environment.





The principle of operation of such a device - a system of rapid exchange of signals, based on the so-called "sense now" bacteria. Bacilli are able to provide early warning of their "comrades" of the colony about overpopulation, chemical hazards or other important events with special signaling molecules.





Display of coliform "turned on" or just flashes stronger in the presence of arsenite - arsenic compounds.
