In Kyiv in 2026, the electric bicycle has ceased to be a toy for enthusiasts. It is a common means of urban transport, bought instead of a second car or to avoid spending money on taxis.
The average price of a normal city model with a 250-500 W motor and a 10-15 Ah battery is now in the range of 35,000-55,000 UAH. For 25,000 UAH, you can find a basic option with simple attachments and a range of about 40 km. Models more expensive than 70,000 UAH are more often equipped with 17-20 Ah batteries, hydraulic brakes, 2.2-2.4 inch tires and a more durable frame.
Now to the numbers.
A-95 gasoline in Kyiv costs approximately 60-65 UAH per liter. A city car with a consumption of 9-10 liters per 100 km spends about 600 UAH for every 100 km of mileage. If a person commutes 20 km to work per day, it is 120 UAH for fuel alone. Over a month, it amounts to about 3,000 UAH, excluding parking, insurance, oil, and minor repairs. Charging an electric bicycle costs an average of 6-12 UAH per full cycle, depending on the battery capacity. One charge is enough for 40-70 km, or even more with calm riding.
Let's imagine a bicycle for 45,000 UAH. With a daily mileage of 20 km, the savings compared to a car will be about 3,000 UAH per month. In this mode, the purchase will pay off in about 15 months. If the mileage is 40-50 km per day, which is typical for couriers or those who travel from the suburbs, the savings increase to 6,000-7,000 UAH per month. Then the period is reduced to 7-8 months. The calculations do not include the cost of car maintenance, which easily exceeds 20,000 UAH per year. If you take these costs into account, the real term will be shorter.
There are everyday details that are often overlooked. During rush hour, the drive from Troeshchyna to the center can take more than an hour. On an electric bicycle, the same route through courtyards and bike paths takes 35-45 minutes without traffic jams. Parking is not needed, and there are no paid zones either. The battery lasts an average of 700-900 charge cycles. With daily use, this is 3-4 years before a noticeable loss of capacity. Replacing the battery costs 10,000-18,000 UAH, depending on the type of cells.
In Kyiv conditions, an electric bicycle most often pays off in 7-18 months. The term depends on the mileage and whether it replaces a car or public transport. With active driving of 40 km per day, savings are felt after a few months. With rare trips, the payback period is extended, but operating costs remain minimal. This is not a way to earn money, but a way to stop overpaying for every trip around the city.
