Navigable river and the small hill on the flat marshland attracted the settlers Stone and Iron Ages. Roman invaders also recognized this place suitable for settlement and built a fortified camp with a bridge. After the adoption of the Danish Act in 878 Cambridge became the county town and retains this position to this day.
