Innovative power plant operates without CO2 emissions

Cycle technology Rodney Allan does the future hold for power plants operating with fossil fuel emissions.

In childhood, Rodney Allam (Allam Rodney), like all boys his age, dreamed of aviation. On the wall of his room hung a poster depicting Chuck Yeager – the pilot who first broke the sound barrier in the aircraft with turbojet engine. Inspired by the achievements of a new branch of aviation, Allam became a chemical engineer and got a job at the chemical factory of the British division of the American company Air Products & Chemicals.

It was there that he became interested in the idea of how to reduce carbon dioxide emissions produced by large power plants. Where to put the gas, he already knew that BP and Royal Dutch Shell pumped it into the oil field located in the North sea. Injection of gas (which helped to release crude oil from underground deposits) are actively used by the oil industry of West Texas, who used the natural reserves of carbon dioxide. But in England there were no reserves.

Allan used a variety of methods of cleaning emissions on a powerful power station in Scotland. They had different efficiency and one drawback – all were too expensive. The engineer was literally obsessed. He wanted not only to solve the difficult problem, but also to contribute to the fight against global warming. But in the early 1990-ies Allam gave up.

New impetus for his work was in 2009 with the help of the business incubator, 8 Rivers. Its founder bill brown was difficult to interest the all but Braun had the money allocated under the Federal law on the reduction of carbon emissions. Only six months later, Allam was sent calculations written by hand.

"In future, we have to use fossil fuels – whether we like it or not, says Allam. The challenge for us will be the production of electricity without CO2 emissions".Technology called the Allam Cycle, burning natural gas and captures all the produced carbon dioxide. Its main feature is that it produces electricity for the same low price as other modern gas turbines is around 6 cents for 1 kWh.

Modern thermal power plants that burn coal or natural gas, use the heat to generate steam, driving the turbine generators, which turn and generate electricity. Most of them about half of the useful heat is discharged into the pipe together with the steam and carbon dioxide. "Allam cycle" does not use steam. On the contrary, as the so-called working fluid use of CO2. Under pressure, heated to 1000 C carbon dioxide becomes supercritical substance that can exhibit the properties of liquid and gas at the same time. Instead of CO2 emissions dwell in a tightly closed loop, and thereby drives the turbine rotors.

Initially, large companies were considered quackery. Their leaders did not believe that carbon dioxide instead of to fly in a flue, can do useful work and produce electricity, and then still be accomplished for future use. Only company Exelon after two months of examinations has agreed to become a partner at 8 Rivers. The third partner was the company Net Power in collaboration with Toshiba group developed the first power station Allama. Its capacity will be 300 MW of electricity and 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. The developers plan to build such plants at the oil fields.

Allam glad to implement ideas of his dreams and predicts that the first power plant will be repaid within a year. published

P. S. And remember, only by changing their consumption — together we change the world! ©
