GMOs, phosphates, stabilisers — what else are you hiding labels of meat products?

Some components of the usual and familiar products can be hazardous to health. To hide it, the labels write small unreadable print, and use strange regular customers, the names of the ingredients.



Experts Roskontrol conducted the first RAID in the framework of the special project "Label without deceit." It turned out that the labels on many meat products, at least introduce consumer confusion.

What are they hiding? The main problem cited by the experts — unreadable font on the labels. Too small or low contrast against the background, which can be read only with a magnifying glass or a good digital camera and computer screen.

For example, the font size, which, given the composition of ham "Imperiya Vkusa" ("Cherkizovsky" MPZ), just 3 points! The font on the label "doctor's" sausage brands "Mikoyan" — 4 points. For comparison, the well-known standard font for documents is 12 points.

The question arises: why the producers chose such a design of the labels? What are they hiding?

Read the part of ham "Empire of taste" "Turkey": pork, water, Turkey meat, potato starch, salt, soy protein, whey, stabilizers (sodium polyphosphates), animal protein, thickener (carrageenan), gelling agent (potassium chloride), antioxidants (isoascorbate sodium, citric acid), flavor of meat, flavorings, dye fixing (sodium nitrite), food coloring (Carmine).

The components in the composition of the products are listed in descending order of their mass fraction. It turns out, the main component of the "Turkey ham" is pork! Turkey meat in it less than water.



But if you do not eat pork, for example, for religious or other reasons?

The composition of this product also includes the phosphates are far from harmless additives. Due to excess of phosphates in the diet is the excretion of calcium.

Phosphates are indicated on the label as stabilizers (most commonly used E450 pyrophosphates, triphosphates and polyphosphates Е451 Е452). The systematic consumption of foods with phosphate contributes to the development of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, which leads to increased susceptibility to fractures mainly of the hip, spine and wrist.

Previously it was thought that osteoporosis — a disease of the elderly, in our time, according to doctors, 40% of adolescents already diagnosed with reduced bone density.

Phosphates are added to many meat products — sausages, frankfurters, sausages, including pseudocystic.

All the best for the children? Children's products industry is booming. Conscientious manufacturers make special products, which have to meet special, more stringent requirements for composition and quality. What do unfair? Draw the label bears animals, call their product "Baby" or "Kid", put on a shelf with these children's products and all — you already believe, that it is possible to feed the child.

Manufacturers of sausages under the brand names "VELCOM" and "Edge" a product called the same — "Teeny." And their composition is similar and they both contain prohibited for baby food phosphates and flavor enhancer monosodium glutamate.

In sausages "Baby, Nammy" from the "Meat House of Borodino" and sausages"gourmand" from company "Metatr" these supplements, luckily, no, but these products are not suitable content of protein and fat



Another component that is not allowed in children's products, collagen protein, which often point in the as "animal protein" or "protein stabilizer".

Collagen protein is obtained from skins, bones, cartilage and other inedible waste meat processing industry, which replace expensive meat. "Animal protein" is partly replaced meat in three pseudocystic products:

  • Sausage "Suburbs", "Baby"
  • Sausage "Ostankino", "Daddy can"
  • Sausage "Metatr", "Lakomka"

"Collagen protein is dangerous because it contains important essential amino acids – methionine and tryptophan. Indicators of biological value collagen is extremely low. In other words, it can not provide us with all the "bricks" needed to build the tissues of our body and synthesis of the necessary enzymes. Systematic consumption of food containing collagen protein, is harmful, as it threatens nutritional imbalance and protein starvation".

Parents, beware! On these children's sausages have to be written "is a specialized product for baby food" and specified the age of the child (sausage casings is usually 3+).

If the meat product contains phosphates, flavor enhancer monosodium glutamate, "animal protein" or a protein stabilizer, such product can be given!And how many meat? One of the components that replace the meat in the sausage is soy protein. As you know, a large part of the soybeans that are grown in our time — genetically modified. Many internationally recognized scientists think GMOs are absolutely safe. However, in Russia at the end of April 2015 in the first reading adopted a bill to ban the cultivation and breeding of genetically modified plants and animals. The current technical regulation TR TS 021/2011 "On food safety" prohibits the use of raw materials containing GMO in baby products.

Toward genetically modified ingredients can be treated in different ways, but no one disputes the right of consumers to decide for themselves whether to buy products which may contain GM ingredients. But if the product is written in unreadable font as you learn that it is soy?

Among the meat products included in the black list after the inspection, violations of labeling, more than 35% contain soy protein.

Including almond sausage "Mikoyan". Ingredients are listed illegible font, low-contrast against the background, moreover, not specified group of products on which you can judge the ratio of meat and soy in the sausage.

For reference: in meat product meat should be at least 60%, in meat and vegetable from 30% to 60%, in vegetable and meat 5-30%.

In addition, the product title introduces consumer confusion: instead of almonds in this product is the flavor "bitter almond".

Many consumers have a negative attitude towards soy, that is why some producers prefer to call this component in a vaguely "vegetable protein". It is this ingredient included in the "doctor's original" sausage "Metatr" and "traditional dairy" sausages "Korovino".

If the composition of the meat product you see "vegetable protein", it is most likely soy. A large part of the soybeans that are grown in our time — genetically modified.Clever nameIf you prefer meat products from beef, chances are you'll think that "Beef" sausages from the company "Mikoyan" for you.

Our expert, having studied the structure of this product realized that the beef in these sausages — less than 2%! Their main ingredient is chicken meat mechanically separated. It should be noted that according to the doctors, chicken more often than beef, cause allergies, and if you have allergies read the ingredients of the product, the consequences can be very serious.





Recently came into fashion the meat of wild animals, it is considered that it is more natural and environmentally friendly. Here the marketers came up with a cunning move to give the product an original name, in the picture to portray the sausage with some dark accents, and all the finished product — sausage "Wild boar" "KampoMos". Expect that in the really wild boar?

Nothing of the sort. The usual pork and beef. And again the composition is written in small print on the background image of sausage light pink color. For taste, color and aroma product added dyes, flavor enhancers and flavor, and not indicated which.

Deception from the doctor If the manufacturer calls the sausage "Doctor", the product must comply with the requirements of GOST R 52196-2011 composition, quality and nutritional value. In this "Doctor" may not be soy protein, animal protein and starch, it must be at least 12% protein and 20% fat.

But not everyone is ready to produce high-quality "doctor's" sausage. Some use similar names and the sausage on its own rules.

In "doctor's classic" from "KampoMos" in the set a familiar animal protein. In the "doctor popular" "Russian farmer" the main ingredient is poultry meat, and added soy protein, soy fiber, starch and semolina.

Many producers went ahead and "invented" a completely new product — the "doctor's" sausages and sausages. That's really such a type of sausage in the Guest is definitely not. "Doctor" sausage produced under the brand name "Edge", "doctor's" sausages "West Malling", "Mikoyan" and "Cherkizovo". Composition and nutritive value of these sausages is very far from the "doctor's" sausage.

If the sausage is called "Doctor" on the label must be specified in GOST. If not, most likely, will be composed of soy, collagen protein and other components — meat substitutes.Lean meat? Meat processing plant "Mikoyan" has created an entire line of meatless products that mimic meat.

Turn the package of "lean Sausages with paprika" and — attention! The name of the product — "vegetable Cream".

Read the ingredients: soy, water, margarine, and the list goes on — anti-oxidant, preservative, flavor, dye, starch, cellulose, flavor enhancer and flavor... And so 8 lines of fine print.



"Sausage with peppers" and "Pate spicy for lent" upon closer examination, also turned out to be the "vegetable cream" — a mixture of water, margarine, soy protein, and many nutritional supplements. Doctors categorically do not recommend to use similar products: margarine contains TRANS fats that cause atherosclerosis and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes, and a huge number of food supplements may be safe individually, in the aggregate, could have a negative impact on health.

Experts will check not only products, but also household chemicals (washing powders, detergents) and maintenance products (shampoos, shower gels, creams). published
