Drink a lot of coffee? So, you create a lot of waste. According to Sustainable America (Sustainable America), almost half of coffee beans, so called coffee grounds, is thrown away after making coffee. But it turns out that coffee grounds are great and very valuable source of biomass, because of the world coffee production amounts to 4 – 5 million tons per year.
Young London-based company Bio-bean has recently proposed a new solution for disposing of used coffee grounds – manufacture of wood pellets for heating houses.
To do this, the company plans to organize the supply of coffee grounds from one hundred local cafe and start manufacturing wood pellets for boilers. The company expects that the collected waste will be enough to heat 1,000 typical homes in London.
However, this is only the first project startup. Currently the company is working on technology to produce biofuels from coffee grounds, as well as developing the extraction process of valuable chemicals that can be used in other industries.
It is worth noting that proposed by the company Bio-bean solution for recycling coffee grounds are also beneficial to themselves and café, who now will not pay for garbage disposal for this waste.
