"Under the Dome": Complete 8-month Mars experiment

Mars on GavayyahGruppa of six scientists completed a wire on Hawaii 8-month-old Martian experiment. Since October 15 last year, the volunteers lived in an isolated dome simulating both heading to the red planet Mars and the spacecraft base. The complex is located on the slopes of a dormant volcano Mauna Lon. His relief, according to the organizers, was to remind participants of the Martian landscape during fall outside the limits of the dome (to carry out their scientists could only suits).

How to tell one of the occupants of the dome Jocelyn Dunn, a graduate student at Purdue University, after going outside, which was held on June 13 it was extremely unusual to feel the wind. "When we went out the door, it was scary to be outside without a spacesuit," - she said.

Communication participants of the third mission of HI-SEAS (Hawaii Exploration Analog and Simulation) with the outside world was carried out with a 20-minute delay, simulating the conditions of communication with Earth during this flight to Mars. The main goal of the experiment was to analyze the cognitive, social and emotional factors that may affect the crew of the ship heading to Mars.

Inhabitants hemispherical complex confirmed that the collective stay in a confined space is not always easy given. "If you have a well-formed day, then everything is fine, you have a number of friends who will share with you the joy - said Dunn. - However, if the day is not given, it is extremely difficult to be in a confined space. You can not go out and go for a walk (...) All are constantly looking ».

The first mission of HI-SEAS carried out in 2013 and lasted four months, the second - 120 days - was held in March and July of last year.

The longest experience, designed to assess the psychological and physical readiness of man to long expedition to the red planet, is an experiment "Mars-500", which was held in Moscow and ended in November 2011, will last a total of 520 days. The experiment involved three Russians (commander Alexei Sitev, Sukhrob Kamolov physician and researcher Alexander Smolevsky) and three foreigners (French flight engineer Roman Charles, as well as Italian and Chinese researchers Diego Urbina and Wang Yu).
