For comparison, the devastating eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 was the cause of only five shocks per second, and the case is considered the most deadly eruption in US history.
In the case of Mount Redoubt earthquakes were caused by a simultaneous increase in pressure along the fault lines inside the volcano. Pressure directed magma inside the crater of the volcano, and as a result there was friction, enough to appear shock waves - the faster they appeared, the louder became a howling sound. Deep in the bowels of the earth it sounds like the thing arising shriek, but on the surface of the sound is perceived as a barely audible hum.
It happened, and something else: for a few seconds before the actual eruption of the Earth completely silent. The researchers believe that the pressure at this time was the maximum, and the magma in this brief moment was able to break free. The friction was no more - and was not screaming. However, it was only the calm before the storm - this time the magma already raced to the crater of the volcano. In Alaska, as in the next two weeks went a fiery rain.
