Genetics UK decipher the genome of 100,000 people to fight cancer and rare diseases

Specialists of the UK National Health Service (National Health Service) announced plans to build 11 new genetic centers. These plans - part of the project 100000 Genomes Project . The main objective of the project - decoding the genomes of tens of thousands of people to obtain information on various cancers and rare genetic diseases.

Obtaining such information will help in a more effective fight against cancer, as well as a variety of hereditary diseases.

According to the medical superintendent of the National Health Service, this project will enable the service to become a center of scientific thought in medicine throughout the world.

The first phase of the project - the selection of volunteers who agree to provide genetic material for the project. Under the plan, the first phase will begin in February next year. Duration of the project - three years.

To take part in the project, it is necessary to consent to the use of their DNA. All materials will be made anonymous (ie, experts will not know whose genotype stands for). In this case, you must also consent to the use of their health information (card diseases) by third parties (the data will be made anonymous).

According to experts, the data collected during the project will help to create methods for early detection of certain types of cancers and rare genetic diseases. The main condition - is the presence of the patient medical record. That it will not look geneticists do not understand that it is not clear where and purposefully search for specific genes and regions of the genome.
