ISS experienced a new technology remote control rover on Earth

Remote control robots on other planets - a rather difficult task, and one of the problems in this area - the delay in transmitting the signal to the controlled object, and vice versa, due to the long distances. In addition, the rotation of the planets in orbit around the Sun and around its axis adds another problem - the interrupt signal.

The other day on the ISS to test a new remote control system that allows the operator to maintain filed team, resuming control of the machine after the resumption of communication with the device. August 7 was conducted the first test of the system. The astronaut Alexander Gerst (Alexander Gerst) ran rover on Earth (EuroBot, rover dimensions comparable to the size of a passenger car). According to the project team, the tests have been even better than planned.

session lasted 90 minutes, it takes so much one revolution of the ISS around the planet at an altitude of 400 km. The control station is located in the Дармштадте, Germany, as the team passed through ESA operations center in Brussels, Belgium, and the operations center NASA.

The operator to control the rover with a dedicated laptop, giving the task to move and receive photos entourage. All tasks were performed, problems during the test does not arise.

The project itself is remote management rovers was called Meteron (Multi-purpose End-To-End Robotic Operations Network), work on it started in 2012. The task of the project - the creation of "space network" that would operate without any problems all sorts of vehicles on the surface of other planets orbit.
