Medal programmer

Software Engineer Vivin Paliat (Vivin Paliath) told the story , as he received the medal of the US Army for their work.

Vivin worked as a specialist in logistics and supply inventories, when his unit was transferred to Iraq in 2005. In the army, his job was to maintain the software for the delivery of equipment and spare parts in military units, as well as in licensing soldiers.

All this he did in a DOS program called Unit Level Logistics System - Ground (ULLS-G) with minimal automation. The program required constant input manually. But Paliat manages to successfully apply their programming skills, he found the ODBC-driver system ULLS-G, then wrote the Perl scripts and macros Excel, with the help of which it was largely automate the task of entering information.

The chief programmer was so impressed this work that presented an award Paliata Army Commendation Medal , which programmer awarded in 2006.

This is a very impressive story. It shows that the programmers can bring real benefits to home and deserve a reward for their work.

History Vivina Paliata - is not the only case. Many other programmers received awards from the military authorities. And most of the exponential can be considered history a programmer Grace Hopper, in whose honor even called data center and a new model of the destroyer USS Hopper .
