Review ASUS VivoTab Note 8

Today, we continue to acquaint you with the device from ASUS on the new platform Bay Trail. The pioneer was the transformer ASUS T100 , which we wrote about earlier. VivoTab Note 8 is built on the same platform and running a modern 4-core processor Intel Atom Z3740. Due to the small 8-inch screen, compact body and a full Windows 8.1 device is a great helper in various tasks. An important difference from the competition is the stylus from Wacom, which facilitates the work in desktop mode.

Options h4> ASUS VivoTab Note 8 comes in a small box with a matte interesting cap design.

Completion is scarce: the power supply cable and micro USB. Of course, affects budget class device, but could be put OTG-cable or cover.

Charger standard sizes with a current of 2 amps.

Appearance h4> C glance tablet is a bit like the Nexus 7, which also produces the ASUS, but, looking more closely, the differences become apparent. The device has dimensions 221h134 mm with a thickness of 11 mm. Also pleasing weight: only 390 Everything else unusual that such a little thing - is, in fact, a full x86-computer fits in the palm.

The front side is covered by glass, the screen has a small frame, above and below it a little wider. The camera and light sensor located above, below is a logo ASUS.

The back panel is made of soft-touch plastic. The tablet is a pleasure to hold in your hand, it does not slip and tries to fall out of the hands. Matte finish dark gray copes with fingerprints. Top and bottom sides of the visible spaced lattice stereo speakers. The main 5 megapixel camera located on top, just below - label ASUS.

The legacy of the notebook got a bunch of different labels. I hope that in the future manufacturers will come to a more aesthetic solution.

Interfaces h4> We now turn to the interfaces on the tablet. Actually, not so much, it's pretty modest. The top of the plug is 3.5 mini-jack for connecting a headset. Near micro USB for charging. Also, it supports OTG, giving us the ability to connect various peripherals.

Of course, I would like to have a complete cable OTG, but it will have to buy separately. All USB-devices are detected as usual: flash drives, USB-hubs and stuff. Here are just some of the USB-disks, which require more than 0.5 A, not "cling". For example, this drive consumes 0.4 A and successfully identified a system.

The left side is a button that causes the startup screen microSD card reader. Supports cards up to 64 GB. Comes with memory card with the image of recovery for Windows 8.1.

Right edge holds the volume rocker and power button with the display operation.

When charging the LED is illuminated in orange, but in general it is very difficult to see. On the one hand, it does not distract attention from the other - not too convenient to watch, has been charged plate or not. Also on the right side hides stylus Wacom.

The screen and camera h4> ASUS VivoTab Note 8 has a screen diagonal of 8 inches with a resolution of 800 by 1280 pixels. On the one hand, it is not FullHD, but with this PPI (188) and a small diagonal picture looks quite good.

Of course, in the Desktop interface is too small, but I was comfortable to work with. The tables or text documents already handy stylus. Thanks to the IPS-matrix picture is saturated, but the sun is not enough screen brightness.

IPS also provides us with good viewing angles and no inversion of colors. Due oleophobic coating glass covered fewer fingerprints and easier to clean.

Antiglare filter bad doing its job. Bright light sources are well reflected on the screen and distract from work, but it's trouble all budget touchscreens.
Above the screen is a 1.2 megapixel camera for video calls. During her work alongside indicator lights. Main camera 5 megapixel with autofocus. Photo quality is average.
Photo examples.

Input Devices h4> Capacitive screen supports up to 5 simultaneous touches. Sensitivity at a good level, touching all well captured without any problems. If you connect the adapter to the OTG-micro USB connector, you can easily connect the keyboard and mouse. Also peripherals can be connected using Bluetooth.
Comes with a stylus from Wacom. By the size of it as a normal pen length of 12 cm and a thickness of normal, not like in the days of PocketPC. The pen has a small button that emulates pressing the right mouse button. The button is located just at the point where the thumb rests - a convenient solution.

Also, if you can long press context menu. Stylus itself requires no additional power supply and battery-free. Digitizer stylus sees at a distance of 2 cm from the screen turns off while responding to fingers. Due to this, you can safely put a hand on the screen, as if on paper, and write on the tablet. Built-in handwriting in Windows 8 works fine. Even sloppy handwriting is well recognized.

In the tiled interface stylus is not needed, all the controls are large and comfortable. It's the same with software for Modern UI. But in the Desktop stylus handy, such as when you need to edit a complex table or select a large number of files. In general, I'm fairly well without a stylus, just getting on the small icons familiar interface Windows.

Performance h4> After the release of the new Bay Trail platform from Intel, cheap tablets on Atom earned a good reputation as a productive device with decent uptime. The system has a full-fledged with 4 cores in SoC-small chip from Hyperthreading refused. Chip fabrication process is performed on 22 nm as Haswell, which reduces power consumption and less heat. 2 GB of RAM will be sufficient for undemanding everyday tasks.

ASUS VivoTab Note 8 running on a full Windows 8.1. Also preinstalled license office suite Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013. Have a desktop operating system gives us a huge selection of a variety of programs for Windows for virtually any purpose. The system boots about 15 seconds. Waking from sleep is instant.
In the 32GB version of the system disk has a capacity of 28GB, 15GB installed system takes. As a result, the user is available only 12GB. This problem all manufacturers of such devices. Still, we've learned that buying a 32GB tablet will not be available to us up to a couple of gigabytes, which takes the system, but not 20GB!

Battery and duration of h4> In addition to the good performance of the new generation of Atom processors shows excellent uptime, catching tablet based on ARM.
Translate the tablet in air mode, set minimum backlight and get 10 5 hours running time. A very good result.
When viewing HD-video, with the average brightness of the screen tablet lasted 6:00.
Put the average brightness, constant surfing the Internet, one link every 30 seconds - a total of 8 hours.
To fully charge the battery need 3, 5 hours using a regular charger.

Conclusion h4> Once again, ASUS find attractive niche seemingly already forms the tablet market. The new tablet is well suited business man residing in the road. Often this group of consumers is necessary to use specific enterprise software, which usually happens only for Windows. Also in a way convenient to have a full MS Office in case you need to edit any document urgently. The presence of the stylus makes it easier to work with large documents in desktop mode. The small size and weight make it a long time without fatigue hold the tablet in one hand. Time operation of the device will last for all day use. Also in all criteria ASUS VivoTab Note 8 will be a good assistant for the student. In fact, it replaces the netbooks that are no longer popular, losing his seat plates.
The recommended price of 13990 rubles. I>
