Aleksei Balabanov Oktyabrinovich was born in 1959 in Sverdlovsk, now Yekaterinburg. He graduated from the translation department of the Gorky Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages, worked as an assistant at the Sverdlovsk Film Studio.
In 1990, he graduated from the Directing Department of the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors (experimental workshop "auteur cinema" L. Nikolaev, B. Galanter), after which he moved to St. Petersburg.
Balabanov is the director of such cult films as "Brother", "Brat-2", "war", "Dead Man's Bluff", "I'm not hurt," "Cargo 200».
