Work on the program "Energia" - "Buran" began in 1976.

86 ministries and departments and enterprises all over the USSR in 1286 (about 2, 5 million people) participated in the creation of this system.

The lead developer of the ship has been specially created by the NGO "Lightning." Production is carried out at the Tushino engineering plant since 1980 .; by 1984 he was ready the first full-scale copy. With factory ships transported by water transport in the town of Zhukovsky, and then (with the aerodrome Ramenskoye) - air (on a special plane-transporter VM-T) - to Baikonur.

His first and only space flight "Buran" made November 15, 1988 The spacecraft was launched c Baikonur Cosmodrome using a launch vehicle "Energy" and after the flyby of the Earth made a landing on the airfield a specially equipped "Jubilee" at Baikonur. The flight went without a crew, a fully automatic mode, in contrast to the "shuttle" that can land only on manual operation.

In 1990, work on the program "Energia" - "Buran" were suspended, and in 1993 the program permanently closed. The only fly in space (1988), "Buran" was destroyed in 2002 collapsed the roof of the hangar assembly and test facility in Baikonur.

In the course of the project "Buran" was made several prototypes for dynamic, electrical, aircraft and other tests. After the closure of the program, these products remain on the balance of the various research institutes and industrial associations. It is known, for example, the presence of prototypes at the Rocket and Space Corporation "Energia" and the NGO "Lightning».

The length of the "Buran" - 36, 4 meters, wingspan - about 24 meters, the height of the ship when it is in the chassis, - more than 16 meters, starting weight - more than 100 tons. The cargo bay can accommodate a payload mass of up to 30 m. In the bow compartment is inserted sealed welded cabin crew and people for work in orbit (up to 10 people) and most of the equipment for flight in a space-rocket complex autonomous flight in orbit, descent and landing. The volume of the cabin is more than seventy cubic meters.

It has a delta wing with variable sweep and aerodynamic controls operating during landing after returning to the atmosphere - the rudder, elevons and aerodynamic shield.

"Baikal" - the name of the Soviet Space Shuttle created in the framework of the "Energy-Buran". The launch took place on February 4, 1992. The flight program included a seven-day stay in space and dock with the station "Mir". Unfortunately, at the beginning of the flight there was an emergency situation and "Baikal" made an emergency landing. This was the basis for the collapse of the Russian program to create shuttles.

In fact, the words "Baikal" (red face roman like «Arial») graced the side of the first Space Shuttle flight personnel instance "Buran" in virtually all times during ground tests. However, shortly before the launch on board Space Shuttle black italics was applied the name "Buran", by which he went to flight and became known around the world. The name of the ship and the whole program - "Buran" - was known to all those who had them at least something to do with (including outside the USSR) from the inception of the program. However, in view of the all-embracing secrecy word it is not recommended to use the open, and therefore born "Baikal" (as it was later put into circulation Open title carrier rocket "Energy", known in the art as the product 11K25).

The story of the flight of the spacecraft "Baikal" - this April Fool's joke (2000), created by the administrator of the website www.buran.ru Vadim Lukashevich. Joke performed at the highest professional level, and if not for the special hints that it is a joke (background article is designed as a low contrast repeating pattern, consisting of a silhouette of the ship and the inscription "April Fools"), even to experts in the field of space would be easy to explain, it's - drawing.
