The Danakil Depression: Earth without its usual settings

There are beautiful landscapes. There are harsh ones. And then there are those next to which your inner voice quietly asks: "Are we definitely still on Earth?" The Danakil Depression in northeastern Ethiopia belongs precisely to the latter.

Here, the African, Somali, and Arabian tectonic plates converge. The Earth's crust is slowly stretching, pulling apart, and breaking. The process is on such a massive scale that millions of years from now, the region's geography could change beyond recognition—all the way to the emergence of a new ocean basin.

However, waiting a few million years for the experience is not strictly necessary.

Nearby lies Dallol, one of the strangest volcanic regions on the planet. Instead of the usual image of scarlet lava, sulfur fields, salt crusts, hot solutions, and bodies of water in almost obscenely bright shades appear before your eyes. Yellow. Turquoise. Poisonous green. Sometimes it feels as though someone has cranked the image saturation up to the maximum.

Except this is no filter.

For humans, the environment here is extremely hostile: heat, toxic compounds, and chemically aggressive saltwater. Yet certain microorganisms feel far more confident. Extremophiles have adapted to conditions that appear incompatible with life for most living creatures.

This is precisely why such regions interest travelers and scientists alike. By observing life in Earth's extreme environments, researchers gain clues as to where and in what form it might be sought beyond our planet.

Socotra: The island where evolution worked in solitude

On Socotra, science fiction begins not with geology, but with plants.

The archipelago belongs to Yemen, although its natural history is closely tied to Africa. Prolonged isolation has turned the islands into a unique laboratory of evolution. Of the nearly eight hundred local plant species, roughly a third are found nowhere else.

The main celebrity is the dragon's blood tree. Imagine a thick trunk that unexpectedly branches out at the top into a dense network of branches, forming an almost perfect green umbrella. Or an upside-down mushroom. Or the antenna of some ancient civilization—whichever interpretation you prefer.

A dark red resin oozes from the damaged bark. Its name sounds as though it were invented by fantasy screenwriters: "dragon's blood."

Nearby grow bottle trees with bloated trunks, as if someone took a regular plant and stretched its base in a graphic editor. This shape helps store moisture. When the tree blooms, pink flowers appear on its nearly bare branches—a combination that looks even less plausible.

Isolation played into Socotra's hands. Complex logistics held back mass tourism for a long time, allowing a significant portion of its unusual nature to be preserved. Since 2008, the archipelago has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wadi Rum: Mars within driving distance

You have almost certainly encountered this landscape before. It was simply disguised as another planet.

The Jordanian desert of Wadi Rum has served as a natural backdrop for sci-fi cinema for many years. Scenes for "The Martian," "Dune," "Prometheus," films from the "Star Wars" universe, and other pictures requiring a convincing extraterrestrial landscape were filmed here.

The reason is obvious at first glance. Massive granite and sandstone walls rise above the reddish desert. Between them lie canyons, stone bridges, arches, and spaces where the familiar signs of civilization nearly vanish.

The wind was the primary sculptor here. For millions of years, it eroded the rock, blew away the soft layers, and left the harder ones behind. The result is architecture without architects.

At the same time, Wadi Rum is far from lifeless. Petroglyphs and other traces of human presence remind us that people appeared here long before the film crews. Today, many local residents are connected with travelers and the film industry. It is amusing: a place depicting alien worlds feeds people in a thoroughly earthly way.

Salar de Uyuni: Where the horizon disappears

Our brain loves clear geometry. Here is the ground, here is the horizon, and above is the sky. Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni is capable of breaking this system in a matter of seconds.

The world's largest salt flat lies on a high-altitude plateau. When the surface is dry, an almost endless white field stretches before the traveler, broken into polygonal salt crust patterns. Already strange.

Yet the true magic begins after the rain.

A thin layer of water turns the perfectly flat surface into a massive mirror. The sky is reflected beneath your feet so precisely that the horizon line vanishes in places. You feel as though you are suspended between two skies.

Photographs from here often look suspiciously fake, as if photo editing was involved. But the reason lies precisely in the lack of familiar visual experience: the brain struggles to accept a space where there is almost no boundary between up and down.

An ancient lake once existed here. The water receded, leaving behind vast deposits of salt. Hidden beneath the salt crust are also significant reserves of lithium—a resource that has gained immense economic importance.

And here a thoroughly earthly contradiction arises. Beneath the fantastic landscape lies valuable raw material. Consequently, preserving the landscape inevitably clashes with economic interests.

Lencois Maranhenses: A desert that doesn't know how to be a desert

White dunes stretch toward the horizon. Heat. Sand. Almost not a single tree. It seems like a familiar scenario.

And then a blue lagoon appears between the sand dunes.

A few hundred meters further—another one. Then the next. In some, the water is bright blue, in others greenish. And there are hundreds of such bodies of water.

Lencois Maranhenses National Park in Brazil looks like a glitch in nature. Strictly speaking, however, it is not quite a desert: too much precipitation falls here for that definition.

The sand is brought in by a complex chain of processes. Rivers carry it to the Atlantic, currents and waves redistribute it along the coast, and the wind drives it further inland. This is how vast fields of light dunes are formed.

During the rainy season, water collects in the depressions between the dunes, forming temporary lagoons. The result is a combination of two things we rarely expect to see side by side: nearly sugar-white sand and crystal-clear fresh water.

It is this unexpectedness that makes the landscape feel so alien. If there were palms and lush greenery around, the brain would quickly file the image under "tropics." But here, the scenery seems to have been taken from different climate zones and randomly combined.

Yellowstone: The beautiful lid of a massive geological machine

Yellowstone looks more familiar than the other places only from a distance. Forest, mountains, rivers, bison. Almost a postcard.

Then the ground starts to smoke.

A powerful volcanic system operates beneath the national park. Hot rocks heat underground water, pressure builds, and the water forces its way to the surface. Hence the geysers, boiling mud pots, and vibrant thermal springs.

Some bodies of water acquire such saturated yellow, orange, green, and blue hues that they look painted. The color arises not only thanks to minerals; communities of microorganisms capable of surviving at high temperatures play a major role as well.

One of the most famous geysers is Old Faithful. Its popularity is primarily due to its relatively predictable eruptions. Tourists gather around and wait. Then a column of hot water and steam roars out of the ground. A few minutes pass, and the surface looks almost calm again.

This is perhaps Yellowstone's main oddity. On top are forest trails and tour buses; underneath is a massive active system, constantly reminding us that the thin solid crust beneath our feet is far from the whole Earth.

Popular scare stories love to assign Yellowstone a date for an impending "supereruption." The original material provides no such grounds: the region's activity is monitored, and no signs of an imminent catastrophe are described there.

An alien planet begins much closer to home

We are used to expecting true exoticism from outer space. Mars must be red, Jupiter's moons icy, and distant planets covered in strange forests and oceans of unknown composition. Otherwise, it hardly seems impressive.

Yet Earth has already gathered almost all the necessary set dressings.

There are the acid wastes of Danakil. The isolated botany of Socotra. The stone Mars of Wadi Rum. The sky beneath your feet in Uyuni. The blue lakes among Brazil's white dunes. Yellowstone's boiling geology.

And not a single one of these places had to be invented by an artist.

That is probably why they leave such a powerful impression. An alien planet remains a fantasy as long as we look at it on a screen. Here, however, you can feel the heat of the air, hear the wind between the rocks, see steam rising straight from the ground, and leave a boot print where the landscape looks utterly impossible.

Sometimes the simplest way to be amazed by Earth all over again is to look at it as if you had landed here for the very first time.
