This railway connects Chakaral on the Pacific coast from Potrerillos, remote mountain (2850 m.) Settlement with smelters. In these parts almost no precipitation falls so that the road is still there right on the steep slopes of the Andes. Copper mining in the region plan to stop very soon - in 2012 this route will cease to exist.
