A grim reaper in a black cape and other alarming signs at the coronation of Charles III, which seemed frightening to the British

The King. Charles III He inherited the throne on September 8 last year, but his coronation was held on May 6, 2023. The previous coronation in the UK was almost 70 years ago, when on June 2, 1953, the ceremony was held for Elizabeth II. And such a long-awaited event was not without surprises.

GettyImages Today editorial office "Site" I will tell you what was interesting at the coronation. Some facts frightened the audience, as they were interpreted as a bad omen. And some of the British openly opposed the new king. What's going on?

We are surprised that Prince Charles, after becoming king, suddenly turned into Charles. After all, in Russian sources, he is now referred to as King Charles III. Let’s try to understand this confusion.

When the future king was born on November 14, 1948, he was named Charles Philip Arthur George. When he became king, he could choose any of these names. And many expected that the choice would be made in honor of his grandfather, whose name was George (Georg).

However, Charles decided to keep his first name, which alarmed many Britons. The fact is that this name is considered unlucky for both the monarch and his subjects. What to say, if during the reign of Charles I there were uprisings in Scotland, and also there was the English Revolution. Charles I was executed at the age of 49.

If you remember Charles II, he had an epidemic of plague. The Great Fire of London lasted four days. 13,000 houses and 87 churches were burned. Only 80,000 people lived in central London, and 72,000 Londoners were displaced by the fire.

Charles decided not to change his name. And after the coronation, he simply received the serial number of the ruler – Charles III. Why is it that Charles became Charles III? The fact is that in Russian-speaking countries it is customary to call kings in the German (or Latin) manner. Henry becomes Henry, John becomes John, and Charles becomes Charles. In order to comply with this rule, we will hereafter call the monarch Charles III.

Not the most successful name of the ruler on the move alerted many. Therefore, the oddities at the ceremony were considered with special care. For example, when the crown was placed on the head of Charles III at the most crucial moment, it tilted and almost fell. The archbishop had to make another attempt and even slightly press to securely fix the crown on the king's head.

However, this can be recorded in strangeness, because the weather was cool, sometimes it rained. Therefore, there is no need to talk about overheating or sunstroke here.

When the royal couple was riding in a carriage, one of the horses, who was in the procession about 10 meters away, suddenly turned off the planned route and stood on the rack. After that, the frightened animal demolished a metal fence and injured a female police officer.

Not without protests. Anti-monarchists staged a procession, during which they held banners reading "Not my king" and even "The king is a parasite." Police seized the megaphone and arrested 52 people. It was reported that the protesters were going to throw something into the crowd to cause panic during the celebration.

The strangest figure, however, was the appearance in an empty corridor in the midst of the celebration of a strange black figure with a staff. The uninvited guest appeared in the frame for only a few seconds, but for a long time excited the minds of millions of people.

One of the users of social networks, posted a short video with a mysterious figure, called her “angel of death”. Others thought it was the ghost of Princess Diana (Charles' first wife, who died in a car crash years ago).

Whatever it is, Charles III is now king. And his subjects can only hope that all bad omens will turn out to be only a figment of the imagination and only. And the monarch himself will be remembered only from the good side. Let's see what happens.
