Doctors unanimously declare: “Vaccination is the only method of preventing this contagious disease.”

There is now an outbreak of measles in Ukraine. As of early January, the number of cases of measles has increased by 43 times. Last year, 3,000 cases were reported. For comparison, in 2016 there were only 100. Most of the sick children. And the situation is only gaining momentum. There have already been at least 5 deaths.

Measles outbreaks are observed in different areas. Geography is quite wide: Odessa, Kiev, Lviv, Zaporozhye and other cities and regions as a whole. The situation with measles has worsened not only in Ukraine. For example, in Russia, the incidence has doubled. And from the summer the situation only got worse. What is the cause of such an outbreak, how is it dangerous and how to protect yourself?

Editorial "Site" I decided to look into these issues.

Whether to get vaccinated against measles is an acute viral disease that has a high level of susceptibility. They are easily infected, because measles is transmitted by airborne droplets. The main symptoms are high fever, inflammation of the mucous membranes, conjunctivitis, as well as a skin rash.

Measles weakens immunity, which increases the risk of contracting other bacterial infections. Because of this, otitis, measles pneumonia and encephalitis can develop. The measles virus penetrates the brain and provokes chronic inflammation, the brain stops working normally and dies.

What is the cause of measles outbreaks? There are a number of reasons, but the main one is the mass refusal of parents to vaccinate their children. To prevent an epidemic, 90% of the population needs to be vaccinated, and only 45% of children were vaccinated last year. Due to such a low indicator, herd immunity decreases, so measles returns in outbreaks.

DepositPhotos What to do? Doctors say that the only really effective way to protect measles vaccination. One dose of vaccine protects 95% and two by 99%. We believe that measles It is necessary, and these figures only confirm it.

Some will say that there have been cases of the disease in vaccinated children. It is quite possible, but the disease in a child who received the vaccine is easier and the risk of complications is much less. Most often, the disease occurs in a hidden form, without the manifestation of any symptoms.

The measles vaccine is now mandatory. By the way, adults tolerate the disease much worse than children. So if you were not sick in childhood and were not vaccinated, then there is a reason to think about vaccination. If vaccination in childhood was not carried out, then you need to do 3 vaccinations to form immune protection: the first two doses at intervals per month, and the third one after a year.

Measles is especially dangerous for women. In 20% of cases, measles during pregnancy leads to its interruption or malformations of the fetus. Pregnant women cannot be vaccinated.

During the outbreak, parents of children who have not been vaccinated are confused. Can I get vaccinated when there is an epidemic? Not only is it possible, it is necessary.

The vaccine does not pose a danger to the body of the child. There are not so many contraindications to vaccination: increased sensitivity to neomycin and chicken eggs (meaning a strong allergic reaction, acute infections and pregnancy).

DepositPhotos In conclusion, I would like to give a few figures. The World Health Organization reported 134,000 measles deaths worldwide in 2015 – nearly 360 cases per day or 15 cases per hour. Most of the patients are children under 5 years old. Vaccination prevented 20 million measles deaths between 2000 and 2015.

Ultimately, whether to get vaccinated is up to you. Just think again about the fact that measles is a fatal disease, and the vaccine is harmless and has almost no contraindications. Don't you think losing a child because there's some fear of getting vaccinated is absurd to say the least?
