What is parallel parking?

The happy day of a novice motorist has arrived: a driver's license in your pocket! It would seem that he sat down and drove, but in the conditions of a large city, if it turns out to find a free parking space, then parking a car is not so easy. You can have the most expensive car and know all the rules of the road by heart, but without the basic skills of parallel parking, it is almost pointless to get behind the wheel.

Due to the unprecedented number of people who want to master driving skills, too little time is given to teaching proper parking in driving schools. Parking the car in front is not so difficult: it is enough to take into account the distance to the obstacle and stop in time. You can't say a lot about parking backwards. Knowing how to park the car in reverse, you can park in the eye of a needle!

In any parking lot, parking lot or busy street, this skill will play into your hands and help you feel more confident driving your favorite four-wheeled friend.

In large cities, drivers often leave their cars along the road next to each other when there are no specially equipped parking areas. This is where parallel parking skills come in handy! In a limited area, parallel parking should be carried out exclusively in reverse, otherwise it will not be possible to park the car successfully, and this is fraught with an accident.

  1. Finding the right place
Slowly move along the line of parked cars. Finding a vacant parking space, slow down and reasonably assess whether your car will fit there. Remember: in order for the rear and front parts of the car to fit completely, you need to have another 60 cm in reserve. And, importantly, ignore the hurried drivers in the back who are desperately honking and grumbling. Your job is to park well, the rest is not so important.

  2. Alignment
Stop the car parallel to the car, which is parked in front of the free space, at a distance of 80-100 cm. Now slowly back up until the rear rack of your car is equal to the bumper of the car you need to park behind. You can navigate by the black rubber band on the rear right window: it should be at the level of the rear left headlight of the reference machine.

  3. Departure
Install the car according to the above landmarks and turn the steering wheel to the right as much as possible. Take your time to reverse, forming a 45 degree angle with the sidewalk. Reverse until you see in the left rear-view mirror the right front headlight of the car standing behind or until the right rear-view mirror is equal to the left corner of the front car. Stop and level the steering wheel.

  4. Straightening
The final stage will go smoothly if the previous three are clearly implemented. Turn the steering wheel as far left as possible and slowly reverse until you make sure that your car is parallel to the curb. Stop the movement, align the wheels and take a position at a safe distance from the cars in front and behind, leaving the same space between them. Before turning off the engine, move it to a neutral position and turn on the parking brake. Congratulations, you parked like a pro!

Mastery comes only with experience, and it is impossible, having learned only the theoretical basics of driving, to consider yourself an experienced driver. An experienced motorist must not only know the rules of the road by heart, but also move, maneuver, turn around and, of course, masterfully park! Diligently hone the acquired skill and very soon you will learn to quickly and accurately drive backwards to any free parking space thanks to the mere movement of the steering wheel.
