Why Soviet etiquette rules allowed not to remove the fur hat in the room

Have you ever seen people wearing winter hats in a restaurant? This is exactly what millions of Soviet women did for decades. They did not shoot fashionable fur hats in restaurants, in the cinema and theater, or at work.

What is the origin of this mysterious phenomenon, which not only baffles foreigners, but over the years seems rather strange even to those who lived in the USSR? Let's try to figure it out.

By the end of the 70s of the last century, not without the help of the heroine Barbara Brylska from the cult film “Irony of Fate, or With a Light Steam!”, the fashion for high and lush female fur hats came to the USSR.

She was certainly not born out of nowhere. Already in the 50-60-ies cult item wardrobe of Soviet people became buffet hats.

They made them out of reindeer skin. And it cost such a headdress a lot of money. Therefore, not everyone could afford it. No wonder the heroes of the film “Girls” (1961) argued for a buffet hat.

GettyImages In the seventies, foxes and fox hats rose to the peak of popularity. What can I say if Queen Elizabeth wore one? It was possible to buy a ready-made hat only for free, so the phone of the sewing master was stored in families as a precious relic.

Why did Soviet women not take off their hats indoors? A few decades ago, a fur hat was worn not only to protect against the cold, but also as a symbol of prosperity and high social status. You could say it was sort of the 12th iPhone of the '70s.

Therefore, most often you can hear the version that the hats were not removed to protect them from theft. Moreover, cases of theft were quite frequent. And in the wardrobes to take expensive hats, as a rule, did not want.

This version has the right to exist, but does not explain everything. Take, for example, the main New Year’s TV movie of the last 40 years. We recall the scene where Nadia Sheveleva’s friends came to congratulate her on the New Year.

The photo shows that the girls stripped in the hallway, and then, without removing their hat, sat down at the table. Perhaps they were afraid that the imaginary Hippolyte was unclean in his hand? I think this is not the case.

Under a heavy cap fashionable at the time, garments and curls quickly lost volume. And the head under it sweated faster. Therefore, the hairstyle without a hat looked, let’s say, not very presentable.

“What has changed today?” you ask. First, there was the fashion for huge hats. A small knitted hat and in a bag can be hidden, and the hairstyle it does not spoil. Second, the complex hairstyles of the 60s and 70s have sunk into oblivion.

It’s a pity, because there was so much to see! Slicked hair, which is trending in recent years, the hat will not spoil much. Well, good hair care products have become more. Therefore, coming to the restaurant, you can safely take off your hat and in a couple of minutes return your hair to its normal appearance.

Why do you think women in the Soviet Union did not remove fashionable fur hats indoors? Is there a reason we haven’t mentioned?
