The elephant orphanage
Elephants occupy an important place in the life of Sri Lanka, so in Pinnawala was established the state elephant nursery, which opened in 1975. Here come the juveniles, orphaned or injured by poachers.
Here they are raising, growth, feed and guide or in zoos of different countries, or train to work. The youngest elephants — about 4 months. The grown elephants can produce offspring, which is the main goal of our cattery.
Now there are more than 40 elephants, and their number is rapidly increasing. The best time to visit the nursery this time of feeding or bathing because that is when the animal is active and sociable. Here tourists are given the opportunity from close range to observe these animals and, if lucky, to see how the young elephants are fed from milk bottles. The spectacle is simply breathtaking!
Tourists enjoy visiting the nursery, do a lot of photographs, so that you can come close and touch the elephants. The reserve is located on the Northwest of the town Kegalla, in the hills of Central Sri Lanka, 40 km from Kandy.
