St. Stephen's Basilica

Construction began in 1848 under the leadership of architect józsef Hilde. After his death, construction was supervised by miklós Ybl. The Basilica was completed in 1905, the same year it was consecrated.



The total area of the Church is 4730 square meters, the diameter of the dome is 22 meters and a height of 96 m. the Basilica is one of the highest buildings in the city and has the largest bell in Hungary.



St. Stephen's Basilica has a Greek cross plan. Outside above the main portal are marble image of St. Stephen and mosaic painting, executed on projects of Bertalan székely DSC and Mora Tana.



Inside the Church are four columns support the dome and are faced sculptures are the work of jános Pedrosa, Alyosha Strobl and károly Cheney. The mosaic paintings of the dome filled with sketches károly Lotz.



On the main altar stands a statue of St. Stephen — the work of Alyosha Strobl. Around the main altar are five bronze reliefs of scenes from the life of the first Hungarian king — the work of ed Meyer.



On the decoration of the Church worked famous masters of that time, such as dyula Bentsur, PAL Boys, Beni Ferenczy, Leo Fessler and others.



Kept in the Basilica (in the chapel built for this purpose) the most important relic of the Hungarian Church Holy right hand of king Stephen.
