New system turns brewery into a environmentally friendly power plant

Brewing company Bear Republic Brewing in Cloverdale, California, recently signed an agreement for the installation of the new system for the production of biogas from wastes of the brewing process. The system, called EcoVolt is the brainchild of company Cambrian Innovation, which was established in 2006 by scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of technology to commercialize a new class of electricity-generating microbes.

According to the company, Cambrian Innovation, moving from a familiar technology cleaning of sewage to the new system EcoVolt, the brewery will be able to get an annual return of investment of more than 25 percent.

At the heart of the system is a process which is known as electroretinograms, namely the ability of certain microorganisms to release gaseous methane after anaerobic respiration. The entire process takes place in a bio-electrochemical reactor. Ready methane is relatively clean but it still needs to be mixed with some amount of natural gas to start the engine.
