Cars will learn to distinguish the mood of the driver
Every person who constantly uses a car, one way or another, faces aggression on the road. An irritated driver is much more likely to get into an accident. What if the on-board emotion detection system could see the annoyance and intervene at the right moment?
The Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL) has teamed up with PSA Peugeot Citroen to develop an emotion recognition system. The system will be able to detect signs of irritation and fatigue in the facial expressions of the driver.
Irritation has been chosen as one of the key factors that make drivers aggressive. The software developed by the researchers will be able to identify seven universal emotions: fear, anger, joy, sadness, disgust, surprise and suspicion. The combination of the two, anger and disgust, will indicate the driver's irritation.
Despite the initial successes, the developers have not yet decided how the system will respond to the driver’s irritation. Perhaps, in case of detection of aggression, a calm soothing voice will begin to sound, or a proximity sensor and a speed limiter of the car will turn on.
