Table bike for charging gadgets

Two engineers from New York have launched a crowdfunding campaign to produce pedal-powered desktops. Their invention will allow you to charge any office device – from a smartphone to a coffee maker – with the power of your legs. Engineer Pedal Power and avid cyclist Andy Wekin says that the bicycle is by far the most energy-efficient transport.

Vekin’s business partner Steve Blood proposed developing localized energy sources for the local community in Burlington, Vermont. After a little thought, Pedal Power engineers created Big Rig and Pedal Genny – machines that allow a person sitting at a table to independently generate energy to provide their workplace and at the same time pump leg muscles. If their Kickstarter campaign is successful, Blood and Wekin will expand production and release more devices.

In the future, they hope to develop a silent version of an office bike to work in public spaces. Wekin notes that he would like to put his invention in every home, so that people will understand firsthand how much effort it takes to turn on the TV or make a cup of coffee. This will change the way we think about energy saving, says the engineer.

Using Big Rig or Pedal Genny, the average adult can generate 75 watts of electricity in two hours. This is enough to charge a laptop for up to 6 hours or a smartphone for up to 30 or 40 hours.
