Can the 2015 BMW i8 sports coupe, coming this summer, do for hybrids what the Tesla Model S did for battery electric vehicles?

That is, it may sleek, sexy, attention-grabbing coupe with doors that open like insect wings make hybrids... sexy? Of course the new BMW i8 drew crowds wherever was during a one-day test-drive in the last week in and around Los Angeles. 2015 BMW i8 is far more affordable than the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid supercar, which sold somewhere around a million dollars.

BMW I8 coupe has two separate powertrains, each of which can be used by itself if both can be synchronized for maximum power.

The front wheels are driven by a large 96-kilowatt (131 HP) electric motor, powered by a 7.1-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery installed in the tunnel between the two front seats. 231-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine powering the rear wheels through a six-speed of Korobkina.
