Mother's diet alters baby's DNA

A new study by British scientists shows that a mother's diet during pregnancy can alter the DNA of the child.

Experiments conducted at the London school of hygiene and tropical medicine, indicate that the diet of pregnant women has a significant impact on future children.

The study, which involved 2,000 women, was conducted in rural areas.

The main factor observations was the dependence on home-grown produce and seasonality of the climate.

Assessing women, the researchers found that children of pregnant women born at the peak of the rainy season had significant genetic changes, compared with those who were born at the peak of the dry season.

Scientists say that for a full understanding of the implications of such epigenetic effects, further studies are needed.
