Environmental border crossing in the United States
Built by Julie Snow Architects, the border crossing in the town of Warrow, Minnesota, received an honorary award from the American Institute of Architects in 2011. The facility supports U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the U.S.-Canadian border. Both the exterior and interior decoration of the building is made of cedar, obtained in an environmentally friendly way, and emphasizes the natural features of the region in which it is located, the nature of the northern forest. The border complex is equipped with a series of “green” components, including geothermal heating and cooling, a rainwater collection system, and the principles of “solar design” are used in the premises. All this allows the project to qualify for the LEED Silver environmental certification.
