Aesthetic trash disposal in Baltimore Harbour

A solar-powered Baltimore water wheel will clear 50,000 pounds of trash every day. Perhaps the process of collecting garbage will seem completely unattractive and ugly. However, a new water wheel in Baltimore will prove that it is not, and even garbage collection can look cool and fun.

Powered by 30 solar panels and the natural flow of water, the Trash Inceptor water wheel will be able to clean up as much as 50,000 pounds of garbage a day. The Baltimore Coastal Line Partnership hopes to make the harbor navigable by 2020. The solar-powered garbage collector, designed by Clearwater Mills experts John Kellett and Daniel Chase, generates 2,500 watts of electricity per day, enough for an average home in Maryland.

Every year, storm drains carry tons of rubbish and debris from streets down at the mouth of Jones Falls Creek and into Baltimore Harbour. "I'm tired of hearing tourists constantly say, 'Ugh, gross, this harbor stinks,'" says Water Wheel co-founder John Kellett. I thought there had to be a better way than picking up trash. After building a successful prototype and signing an agreement with the Baltimore Coastal Line Partnership,
The world’s first water purification wheel was built in just seven months by just four people.

Here's how it works: two orange bones diverge to the sides, forming a kind of funnel, where garbage floats. Next, spring rakes for the leaves pick up the debris and push it onto a moving conveyor belt, through which the debris comes into a huge, 16-yard basket located on top of the floating dock. After the basket is filled, it is detached, attached to the boat, with which it is delivered to the recycling station, where the garbage is burned and turned into electrical energy. Solar-powered pumps are capable of delivering 20,000 gallons of water per hour to a water wheel conveyor belt.

The water wheel is remarkable not only for cleaning the harbor. The constant rotation of the water wheel helps to deliver much-needed oxygen to the water, which contributes to attracting fish to the harbor, as well as improving habitat conditions and water quality. Trash Inceptor also removes organic waste that, if decomposed in water, leads to oxygen depletion and the release of ammonia.
