Dutch architecture firm UNStudio has completed a thematic pavilion for the 2014 International Horticulture exhibition, which is currently taking place in the provincial Chinese city of Qingdao. The design of the pavilion was implemented three years after the jury of the international forum, held in 2011, awarded the victory to this project.

The main motive of the Dutch made the motto of the exhibition “From the Earth to the Earth”. The buildings in the pavilion are located in the form of a flower and harmoniously fit into the landscaped plateau, which smoothly passes into the surrounding mountain landscape.

Although the city of Qingdao is best known for its signature beer, the coastal city hopes to use the exhibition to create an international environmental image of Qingdao, as well as stimulate the development of other environmentally-minded initiatives. UNStudio has transformed Expo Square from a former desert mountain site into a 241-hectare complex expected to be visited by 15 million foreign tourists before it closes in October 2014.

The complex of the pavilion is built in the form of a Chinese rose, and each building will resemble a petal. These petals-buildings are connected to each other by internal and external paths. Ben van Berkel, chief architect at UNStudio, said: Just as it happens in nature, flowering in architecture is also fascinating. It seems to suggest that the building can open up like a flower and serve as a good occasion for social interaction.”

The pavilion for the exhibition was also created with the help of environmentally friendly technologies such as low-carbon climate control systems, recycled water supply technologies and waste treatment facilities. After the end of the exhibition of landscape art, the theme exhibition park will be turned into a center for eco-tourism. Each building has been specially designed for future use and will be converted into a hotel, conference room or training facility.
