VelociRoACH is the fastest robot in its weight category

The authors of the project emphasize that VelociRoACH moves much faster than a real cockroach (1.5 m / s). The idea to create a fast-legged robot cockroach interested scientists at the University of California at Berkeley. Their new six-legged robot VelociRoACH is made mainly of cardboard, the length of the machine is 10 cm, but it moves at speeds up to 2.7 m / s, this is the fastest robot in its “weight category”.

In terms of speed, the car is second only to the record holder Cheetah from Boston Dynamics (3.2 m / s), that is, the fastest walking robot, more precisely, running. The key to the success of this machine are C-shaped limbs that move up to 15 times per second. The stable movement of VelociRoACH is ensured by light plastic wings and the manner of movement of the limbs, at any time at least three legs must touch the ground.

The robot weighs 30 grams, while it can lift up to 120 grams, so in the future it can be equipped with useful equipment, cameras or various sensors. The only significant drawback of VelociRoACH remains the cardboard body of the robot, light, but very fragile and short-lived.
