Manatees, which are exclusively herbivorous aquatic mammals, eat more than 227 kg of vegetables daily in the zoo. According to the caretakers, they especially like potatoes and lettuce leaves. In the wild, manatees feed on aquatic plants that grow in warm coastal waters.

All three species of manatees (Latin Trichechus), which are Amazonian, American and African manatees are listed as vulnerable species and listed by the IUCN in the International Red Book. The main threat to their lives is human activity: they die from toxic waste, as a result of collisions with motorboats, and also die in fishing nets.

Amazonian manatees (Latin Trichechus inunguis) are found off the east coast of South America (in the Amazon, Orinoco, and their tributaries). American manatees (Latin Trichechus manatus) can be found off the coast of the West Indies (the Caribbean coast from Florida to Brazil).

African manatees (Latin Trichechus senegalensis) live off the coast and in the rivers of equatorial Africa (mainly on the west coast). They are very similar to their American counterparts, only their skin is darker. It is believed that there were once about 20 species of manatees!

It is worth noting that these large aquatic mammals have no natural enemies. Manatee can reach a length of about 3-4.5 meters and weigh up to 600 kg, but most often they grow no more than 3 meters. They prefer to graze at a depth of 3 meters, and sometimes swim to the shore itself.

They are very friendly and peaceful animals that love to communicate with people. They are especially sociable in zoos, as they love to frolic at the surface of the water and please with their appearance numerous visitors.
