Solar-powered artificial palm trees appear in Dubai

From now on, residents and visitors of Dubai will be able to use palm trees – though not real, but artificial ones – to access the Internet via Wi-Fi or charge their smartphones and other portable gadgets. Smart Palm is a high-tech version of the date palm, which was developed by local company D-Idea Media.

In addition to the main features, the device provides tourists with information about local attractions, provides information about routes, and, of course, offers a convenient place to relax in the shade.

The first Smart Palm was installed in Dubai’s Zabeel Park in April, and the other day the second palm opened – it is located on the beach next to the Burj Al Arab Hotel. This 6.5-meter “tree” is somewhat reminiscent of eTrees from Sologic. The shape of the date palm was chosen by the designers of D-Idea Media as a symbol of sustainability, as a historical source of food and building materials for the local population.

Smart Palma itself receives power from photovoltaic panels with a total area of 13.8 square meters.





Tree provides free Wi-Fi with a good signal in a radius of more than 100 meters and has eight charging ports. The device is also equipped with selfie cameras, with which those who wish can make a photo-self-portrait against the background of an artificial palm tree.

Touch monitors located on the trunk of Smart Palm provide local news, weather information, services and companies, as well as public transport routes and schedules. The screens also show various information messages and advertisements.

In order to ensure safety, Smart Palm monitors the surrounding area around the clock. Each of the devices is equipped with a 360-degree infrared surveillance camera and an emergency call button. It is expected that 103 more Smart Palms will be built in Dubai.
