Artificial coral will help to clean the oceans from toxic pollution
Recently published in the scientific journal Journal of Colloid and Interface Science article talks about the new material, designed by researchers from the Chinese University Anhui Jianzhu. The material mimics the structure of sea coral, and it can be used as a filter for water purification from heavy metals.
Artificial corals, which, according to scientists from the Chinese University, can be used to cleanup aquatic ecosystems from the presence of such toxic metals as mercury, lead and various arsenides, consist of true for analysis of nanorods on the basis of aluminum oxide. This chemical component has the ability to attract pollutants contained in the water. However, the scientific community took a long time to figure out the best quality of this substance.
Proposed by Chinese experts nanoplates is suitable for use in marine conditions is best. Based on them, may form corallike reefs, which do not take up much space, but have very high efficiency and a wide sea area.
The nanoplates on the basis of aluminum oxide working on the principle of adsorption — they attract ions of heavy toxic metals and prevent them to spread further in the marine ecosystem. After some time, the plate can pull out of the water and safe way to get rid of accumulated pollutants on them.
To check the efficiency of the plates, the research team was placed in a water environment contaminated with mercury a few korallovidnyh structures based on them. The test results showed that the nanoplates 2.5 times more efficient than purified water, compared with ordinary particles of aluminum oxide.
"We are very pleased with the results of the audit, which showed high efficiency corallike absorbents", — said the head of research, Sanbao van.
"We hope that our work will inspire other scientists to research and development of materials that mimic other biological organisms," adds Wang.
It should be noted that issues of safety and clean environment of the mankind began seriously to ask just a few decades ago. However, we are still discharged into water worldwide toxic waste and metals accumulate from a variety of industries. But even small concentrations of toxic metals causing irreparable damage not only to coral reefs and ecosystems, formed on their basis. Not to mention the health of people who live in coastal areas. published
P. S. And remember, only by changing their consumption - together we change the world! ©
