Aston Martin develops electric supercar

One of the most British in spirit cars will soon appear on the freeways in a new version. At a Bloomberg conference in London on Monday (October 12), Aston Martin chief executive Andy Palmer said the automaker was working on an all-electric version of its sports model, the Rapide, which they plan to unveil by the end of 2017. He said it would be a real beast.

“We’re talking about an electric Aston Martin with 800 to 1,000 horsepower – just imagine being able to create the torque you need,” Palmer told Bloomberg. (For reference, the 2015 petrol-powered Rapide model has 552 horsepower, while the Tesla Model S can produce up to 691 horsepower.)

According to Palmer, the new car is based on the existing model. After that, they plan to start producing an electric crossover. The company unveiled the concept earlier this year — its first DBX crossover — and Palmer said it would serve as the base for the next electric car. The head of the company noted that Aston Martin has no intention to leave the market of luxury cars, whether electric or gasoline cars, and said at the conference that he will try to avoid “sweet stuffing”.

For years, Agent 007, the protagonist of British spy films, James Bond, drove an Aston Martin. At one time he tried to get behind the wheel of German and Italian cars, but it seems that he always dreamed of being behind the wheel of British classics again. In the new Bond movie Ghost, James will be driving the new Aston Martin DB10. According to Palmer, there's a chance that an electric model could make it into a future movie: "It's a hell of a race car," he said. I don’t think James really cares what’s under the hood because it’s all about beauty and speed. published
