A prototype of a flying car Terrafugia ready for testing

The prototype of the Terrafugia TF-X, introduced in 2013 and updated in 2015, has received approval to conduct flight tests. Official permission from the us Federal aviation administration (FAA) issued is only for unmanned version. But the process is clearly moving forward.

Not to mention the dimensions of the prototype: they are only 1/10 of the real car. It should not confuse, because the most important for engineers, a California – based company to conduct extensive testing in the air, work out all the details, completing the key stages of development, and the scaling will not be found.

"Extensive testing of a large-scale prototype, along with tests in the wind tunnel and computer modeling will allow to finalize the appearance of the device," reports common Terrafugia press release.

According to the requirements of the FAA, to test the company may use the airspace over the entire territory of the United States, after agreeing their actions with the relevant authorities on the ground. The prototype allowed the Terrafugia to fly at altitudes up to 121 metres and reach speeds of up to 160 km/h. Achieving stable and safe flight, the developers can move on to creating and testing full-version.

According to the specification, the "true" model of the Terrafugia TF-X with a hybrid power plant will be able to achieve flight speed of over 320 km/h and covered more than 800 km on one tank. For takeoff and landing flying car doesn't require long runways: these operations are provided by a pair of powerful 3-megawatt motors driving the blades of the rotors while riding and in horizontal flight, hiding in the body. Will be folded and the wings of the car that will allow you to ride it on normal roads and Park in a normal garage.

The developers claim that the project is completed they may need from 8 to 12 years. A good solution allows the FAA to hope that it will be 8, not 12. published
