Canadian farmer built an unmanned tractor

Canadian farmer Matthew Rymer from Manitoba independently assembled the autopilot for the John Deere 7930 tractor.

As a hardware part of the project, the inventor used the PixHawk autopilot popular among aircraft modelers, as well as the Arduino platform. The software part consists of the Ardupilot autopilot, the program for remote control of the drone using the MAVLink DroneKit-Python protocol and self-written software code for direct control of the tractor nodes.

Since most of the control signals in this tractor model, including steering and gear shifting, are transmitted electronically, the farmer did not need separate actuators to interact with the mechanical controls. An early version of the autopilot was an Arduino soldered directly to the tractor wiring, but the farmer later refined the system. In the final form, the autopilot fits into a separate box with cables that can be disconnected from the steering column and console with buttons.

According to the creator of the unmanned tractor, the idea to create an autopilot arose from him because of the seasonal need to hire a temporary driver for the time of harvesting grain - for two weeks the task of a temporary driver to drive a tractor with a trailer next to the harvester. As Matthew Rymer notes, this is a boring and low-paid temporary job, and similar temporary assistants are needed simultaneously by all farmers and find someone extremely difficult.

Despite the fact that the tractor is able to independently drive next to the harvester, the farmer still sits behind the wheel to unload grain into the truck. According to the developer, the project is still under development, so he intends to test some improvements in the coming season. published
