Body chemistry: oxytocin is the hormone of trust
Oxytocin, another hormone and neurotransmitter of the pituitary gland. The physiological effects of the oxytocin hormone is to increase the frequency of uterine contractions and the alveoli of the mammary glands in women. In medicine, oxytocin is used for induction of labor.
Relatively recently (2005) were the psycho-physiological role of oxytocin neuromodulator. During several experiments, it was found that oxytocin increases the level of trust to a specific person.
The experience has involved 178 students of the Zurich universities (exclusively men). They were offered to become partners in a game where one played the role of investors and other brokers. In the beginning of the experiment, each participant received a personal financial aid. The investor could leave all these play money himself or to transfer them (all or in part) your broker. In terms of the game the broker on each such transaction welded 200% profit, that is the contribution "the investor" until it reached threefold. The broker could either keep all the money, or return to the investor any part of them. The game was over and the partners have started to count the wins and losses. To create real excitement and vested interest, the experimenters at the end of the experience were given for each "currency" is real 40 Swiss centimes.
A key aspect of the experiment was that some investors were allowed to inhale aerosol formulation of oxytocin, and the rest — neutral spray. It turned out that the investors who received oxytocin, much more trustful of their brokers. 45% of them chose to put in all 12 units of its capital. 21% did not make any attachments or showed low confidence. But among "lazebnikov" everything was exactly the opposite: high trust — 21%, low — 45%.
However, from these results, it does not follow that oxytocin does increase the degree of confidence in partner "business operations". To exclude the interpretation of experience, allegedly "under the influence of oxytocin people are no longer afraid to take risks" was delivered to the additional experiment with the same conditions. However, the amount received by the investor payments were determined is not a broker, and the random number generator. In this situation both groups of "investors" have acted the same way, so that the oxytocin had any effect on them. This control experience has demonstrated that oxytocin increases the level of trust to a specific person, but not pushing to play at random.
Currently it is believed that the level of oxytocin is increased by close contact with a person, especially when touching and stroking. More oxytocin is released during intercourse, and directly in the moment of orgasm — both men and women.
Oxytocin is involved in the formation of relationships between people, including relations between mother and child. Oxytocin lowers the level of anxiety and stress in the person when dealing with other people. Oxytocin stimulates the production of endorphins, causing a feeling of "happiness". The cat who purrs in response to your stroking is a typical example of the effects of oxytocin.published
