Geothermal power station in Reykjanes In Iceland will drill wells to a depth of 5 km

In Iceland, on the territory of an existing geothermal power plant in Reykjanes will drill wells to a depth of 5 km. Therefore, experts hope to increase the electrical capacity of the power plant due to the increase in the number of incoming steam and the installation of new equipment.

Feature of the new wells is that it is the deepest of those used by geothermal power plants.

Representatives of the company HS Orka from Iceland, which is engaged in geothermal development, recently signed a contract to drill the well to a depth of approximately 5 km of New high-temperature well will be drilled on the geothermal field in Reykjanes power station, which is located on the South Peninsula of Iceland.

The company signed a contract with Iceland Drilling, which owns a geothermal power plant in Reykjanes. According to the representatives of company HS Orka, they will use the big rig for this project.

Also in HS Orka said that the new well will be the deepest of those used by geothermal power plants and steam coming from it will have a temperature of about 500 degrees Celsius. Start of drilling scheduled for the second half of this year.

In HS Orka added that the aim of the project is to demonstrate the potential of deep geothermal resources with high enthalpy in order to increase the capacity of existing geothermal power plants.

Representatives of HS Okra said they will work with its partners in the project to develop a new technology that potentially will use superheated steam to increase the capacity of the existing geothermal power plant in Reykjanes.

Reykjanes geothermal power station commissioned in 2006. It is equipped with two generating units of 50 MW of electrical power each. Currently, this power plant as the primary steam is used the steam from the wells to a temperature of about 290 °C. the Maximum depth of the existing wells to the power plant — 2700 m. published
