Rolls-Royce: unmanned ships will go to sea in 2020

Welcome to the pages of iCover blog. If the ambitious plans of the company Rolls-Royce come true, the first semi-autonomous remotely operated vehicles to hit the water routes by the end of this decade. The Group Division, involved in the development of remote waterway management technologies, assured that this method of control will significantly reduce operating costs and dramatically change the entire global transportation sector of water.

As expected, the semi-autonomous navigation system will be a kind of analogue of Uber. According to representatives of the Rolls-Royce all the necessary technology to provide autonomous navigation already exist. However, at the intermediate stage it comes to the implementation of hybrid technology, combining stand-alone control system ships with elements of remote control. This approach will allow in the near future to prepare a real commercial product, to circumvent a number of legal restrictions and go directly to the pilot tests.

Orientation in the ocean will provide a tracking system including radar, lasers and software-autopilot. The captains and navigators, left on the bank will be able to track the movement of the ship in real time and take control in case of emergency situation, or if necessary the commission of a complex maneuver -. When entering the dock, etc.

In its first "test" flight, according to available information, the vessel will be released with a few crew members on board. If the test is passed successfully, the next flight to your ship-robot will go on their own, and management will be carried out in a mixed mode that combines autonomous navigation and episodic transition to remote control.

To participate in the project as partners have wished the Finnish company Finferries, which is ready to send a ferry to 67 meters in the coastal waters of Finland, teeming with small islands. Check how buildable proposed in such conditions, the technology will be easy enough. Another potential partner Rolls-Royce can be ESL Shipping, specializing in sea freight in the Baltic basin.

The Rolls-Royce are confident that the proposed technology in the future will solve the problem of shortage of qualified personnel. The fact that the number of people wishing to devote himself to the career of a sailor and, in particular, the specialization of shipping reduced year by year. And in this case, technology will be able to compensate for the development of such a trend. On the other hand, senior professionals will be able to oversee the ship from the shore throughout the voyage, temporarily retaining the thus workplace. Temporarily, because sooner or later to replace them will likely still come "virtual capital" that do not require monthly payments by companies in the fund s. n.

In the event of an emergency or other critical situations promptly insure the ship will be able to technicians and engineers, sent by helicopter from the nearest coastal point - explain to Rolls-Royce. And such a staff rescue teams on the company's plans will be set up across the planet and will be part of a global warning system and emergency prevention.
