Labrador Retriever able to diagnose cancer with an accuracy of colonoscopy

Since the study found Japanese scientists. The use of dogs in medicine is too expensive, but their image is possible to develop an "electronic nose" that can diagnose cancer of the bowel, bladder, lung, and I * chnikov.

Changes in the human body, in particular the emergence of malignant tumors, change body odor, but as yet unknown to scientists composition of substances that make up a new scent. Accordingly, diagnostic equipment, are examined by the smell, until you can not develop, however, a major step in this direction was made by Japanese scientists.

Doctors have shown that a trained Labrador is able to detect cancer by smell in the air samples from the lungs or faeces samples.

The work of experts from Kyushu University in Fukuoka publishes the journal Gut, included in the package of magazines publishing the authoritative British Medical Journal Group, specializing in the publication of clinical trial data. They suggest that the later will be able to develop an "electronic nose" that is able to detect the occurrence of malignant tumors in the earliest stages.

Meanwhile, for the diagnosis of cancer was used quite natural nose - female Labrador. Used in the experiment the dog was initially trained for rescue of drowning, and in 2005 it began to work for the detection of cancer. As a reward for proper detection of the disease she was allowed to play with a tennis ball. Within a few months she has spent 74 of the smell test. Every attempt was a five-smelling the samples, one of which was derived from human cancer patients. Donors trial began 48 colon cancer patients at different stages and 258 healthy volunteers.

A job that was supposed to solve the eight-dog, complicated by the fact that half of donors "healthy" samples suffered intestinal polyps - benign tumors that are nevertheless possible precursors of cancer. 6% of the breath samples and 10% of stool samples were taken from people with other diseases of the intestine - inflammation, ulcers, appendicitis.

Dog run diagnostics are not less effective than the traditional method of colonoscopy, in which a patient through an opening * Flax fiber is introduced tube with a camera on the end, and therefore "considered" suspicious areas of the intestine.

Labrador correctly diagnose cancer with a high degree of accuracy: in 33 of 36 samples of breath (95% accuracy) and in 37 of 38 samples of stool (98% accuracy). Particularly good results "nosoindikator" reached in the diagnosis of early stages of cancer. Detection of malignant tumors did not prevent the "bait" benign and uncomplicated bowel disease.
