Tyrrell P34 Six Wheeler - the only six-wheeled car, which participated in the race "Formula 1"

How did this car? Once the owner of a racing team «Tyrrell» Ken Tyrrell turned its constructor Derek Gardner proposed to create a totally new and unique car: the idea was to reduce the diameter of the front wheels and hide them behind the fairing, while reducing the drag of the car. This inevitably arises a problem of deterioration of the road surface, which also found a solution - the front wheels became twice.

In the design there are numerous problems associated with the use of four steering wheels. This complexity of the suspension and the braking system, and even the fact that the driver did not see the front wheels, which prevented accurate cornering. The latter problem was solved in an original - in the cockpit cut through a special window for viewing.

First Tyrrell P34 debuted successfully at Grand Prix in 1976, to modernize the car next season. In parallel, work on the six-wheeled car and held opponents - March, Williams and Ferrari. In their case, it ended the experimental samples that have never participated in the competition.

The following year, 1978, the project P34 was abandoned due to problems with the front suspension, and by the refusal of GoodYear in manufacturing 10-inch tires for the front wheels - except Tyrrell they simply no one to buy.

Point in the history of the "six-wheeled" was the introduction of the FIA in 1983 of the new rules, which stated that a racing car can not have a number of wheels, other than four.
