Antikythera Mechanism - is an ancient analog computer designed to calculate astronomical positions. It was renovated in 1900, but its purpose and complexity of managed to establish only a century later.

The device is very unusual because of its historical significance and the fact that it exists in a single copy - this mechanism is even more valuable than any work of art. Antikythera Mechanism is now kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, and is currently part of the exhibition Antikythera shipwreck.



This machine - the oldest known complex mechanisms of data, so it is sometimes called analog computer. The mechanism was set in motion by turning the handle (by now lost), connected by a crown wheel with a large pinion. With the mechanism calculates the position of the sun and moon and other celestial information such as moon phases, eclipses and the cycles of the theoretical position of the planets.
